According to CNBC's story, however, employees at the Gigafactory were still putting
batteries together by hand in December. Tesla seemed to concede some manual
production, telling CNBC, "Until we reach full production, by definition some
elements of the production process will be more manual." Two current engineers
told reporter Lara Kolodny that the manual process could lead to danger, as
batteries may not have required space between cells. Tesla strongly denied
that accusation in a statement to CNBC, with a spokesperson saying, "The
implication that Tesla would ever deliver a car with a hazardous battery is
absolutely inaccurate, contrary to all evidence, and detached from reality." Tesla
shares, which had been trading roughly flat on the day before the report was
released, dropped to a 2% loss after the story hit just after 2:30 p.m. Eastern time Thursday.
